The high performer rerunning the same comparison for the tenth time is not being careful. Every option held open costs working memory the actual work needs, and the fix is a rule decided in advance, not one more pass at the data.
Analysis Paralysis Is Not a Perfectionism Problem
You narrowed it to two options eleven days ago.
Since then you have rebuilt the comparison twice, brought in a third opinion that told you what the first two told you, and opened a tab this morning to re-read a page you have already read three times. No new fact has entered the file in a week. What you have produced, repeatedly, is confirmation that both options are good. That was also true on day one.
You call this being careful. Being careful stopped explaining it around day four.
Why do high performers get stuck in analysis paralysis?
Because the habit that makes them good at hard calls does not know how to switch off. The instinct that earns a reputation for rigour is the same instinct now adjudicating a decision that closed a week ago without noticing it had closed.
This is a different failure from running out of steam by four in the afternoon. Depletion looks like avoidance. Deferring, delegating, reaching for whatever costs least. This looks like the opposite — energetic, engaged, still gathering, still comparing. It feels like diligence because, mechanically, it is diligence. It has simply lost its object. The work stopped being finding the answer some days ago. The work is now generating reasons to keep looking.
There is a real version of this instinct, and it is not the problem. Checking a genuine unknown, stress-testing an assumption that could actually break, bringing in a perspective you have not yet had. All of that is diligence, and it ends when the unknown resolves. What you are doing by day eleven is not that. Nothing you are checking is unknown any more. The comparison has already returned its answer twice. What continues is the ritual of checking, detached from anything the checking could still discover.
Is overanalysing a decision the same thing as perfectionism?
Close enough that the research has a name for it, and the name is less flattering than "perfectionist."
Psychologists distinguish between two ways of choosing. A satisficer sets a standard in advance and takes the first option that clears it. A maximiser keeps searching, on the theory that if a better option exists somewhere, stopping short of it is a kind of failure. Barry Schwartz and his colleagues built a scale to measure this tendency and tested it against real outcomes across several studies. Maximisers did not end up happier with what they chose. They ended up with more regret and less satisfaction than satisficers, and a stronger correlation with depression, despite investing more time, more comparison, and more effort in every decision. The extra searching did not buy a better answer. It bought a longer search.
Notice, too, what the maximising instinct does not do: calibrate. It does not spend eleven days on the decisions that deserve eleven days and twenty minutes on the ones that do not. It applies the same exhaustive process regardless of what is actually at stake, because the process was never being run against the size of the decision. It was being run against the discomfort of choosing without absolute certainty, which is present in equal measure whether the decision is trivial or large.
The trait you are calling perfectionism is, in this literature, a habit that reliably produces worse subjective outcomes than the "good enough" approach it looks down on. That is not a character flaw. It is a description of what maximising actually returns on the effort you put into it, and it is not what you assume it returns.
What does keeping a decision open actually cost you?
Not time, mainly. Time is the visible cost. The real one is working memory, and it is being spent whether or not you are actively thinking about the decision.
Roy Baumeister and E. J. Masicampo ran a series of studies on unresolved goals and found that an open decision does not wait quietly while you do other things. It intrudes: surfacing during unrelated work, pulling attention away from whatever is actually in front of you, measurably worsening performance on tasks that have nothing to do with the decision itself. The open loop interrupts on its own schedule, which is rarely a convenient one. This is why the decision resurfaces at odd moments: midway through an unrelated meeting, while reviewing something that has nothing to do with it, in the ten minutes before sleep. That is not you being thorough. That is the unresolved loop claiming a slice of attention it was never given permission to take, at a moment that has everything to do with the file still being open and nothing to do with the decision itself.
Their more useful finding is what closes it. Not completing the task. Forming a specific plan for when and how it will be completed. The plan, not the completion, is what the mind treats as sufficient grounds to stop intruding. Decide the rule and the loop closes, before the rule has been applied even once. Every comparison you rerun on a decision you have not yet bounded is not a neutral use of an idle moment. It is a live charge against the attention the rest of your work needs, and reading the same page a fourth time does nothing to lower the bill.
Why doesn't "just decide faster" fix it?
Because speed was never the missing ingredient. A stopping rule was.
Telling a maximiser to decide faster asks them to apply more force to a process with no exit built into it. Without a defined threshold for "good enough," there is no point at which continuing to compare becomes the wrong move rather than the responsible one. So urging speed does not produce a resolved decision. It produces a rushed one, made under the same open-ended criterion, followed by the same doubt about whether it was actually finished.
Speed advice also mistakes the audience. It is aimed at someone who is dawdling, unsure, looking for permission to begin. That is not what is happening here. The maximiser is not idle. They are working, hard, on a question the working cannot resolve. The question was never which option is better. Both have already answered that. The real question is whether you are certain enough to stop, and no amount of additional speed produces certainty. Only a rule that does not require certainty does.
This is why "trust your gut" and "just set a deadline" rarely survive a hard call. Neither supplies the missing piece: a definition of done, fixed before you are back inside the comparison and reasoning yourself past it.
How do you actually stop maximising every choice?
Not by becoming a more relaxed person. By setting the standard before the decision, not during it.
A stopping rule fixed in advance turns an open search into a bounded one. Set the threshold a candidate, a vendor, or a strategic option has to clear before you are inside the decision, and anything past that point is comparison for its own sake, not diligence. It works because it removes the one thing maximising depends on to keep running: the absence of a criterion for when to stop. You cannot out-argue an open-ended standard from inside the decision it is currently consuming. You can only replace it, in advance, with a closed one.

It is the fuller manual for building satisficing thresholds into how you decide, so that you are not eleven days into a call that closed on day one. It stops asking you to finish the analysis and starts asking you to define, once, what finishing was always going to mean.
The two options on your desk were both fine on day one. They are still both fine. The twelfth day does not need a better answer than the first day had. It needs the rule that would have told you, on day one, that you already had one.
